Community Menorah Lighting
Westfield – Mayor Michael McCabe, together with the congregation Ahavas Achim, and with the help of Westfield on Weekends, invite community members of all faiths and traditions to an evening of “Latkes and Lights.” The festivities will begin at Park Square on Sunday, December 18th at 6:30 PM in celebration of the first night of Chanukah; the Festival of Lights. Rabbi Shahar Colt will lead attendees in prayer and song, and light the first candle of the community menorah.
After the ceremony, attendees are welcome to share in a feast of latkes at First United Methodist Church, 16 Court Street. Latkes are a traditional dish of fried potato pancake. Fried food is eaten during Chanukah in commemoration of the oil that miraculously burned for eight days when the Maccabees purified and rededicated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
The remaining candles of the menorah will be lighted each evening for the subsequent 7 days of the holiday.
