Amelia Park Arena to Launch Brand New Youth Floor Hockey League
Floor hockey is played in sneakers with the only required equipment being; helmet, gloves and shin pads, making it a very inclusive sport. It provides children who may not be interested in ice skating a chance to play the incredible game of hockey. Through this, they will have the opportunity to learn teamwork, leadership, discipline and hopefully make some lifelong friends along the way.
Amelia Park Arena has always been committed to making the community a better place for not just the children of Westfield, but the entire Pioneer Valley. The arena currently offers an Adult Floor Hockey League that sees ten teams compete for six months out of the year. This new league will be the first time the same opportunity will be provided to the youth of our community.
“I just thought that this was a no brainer” said Billy Fellows, Amelia Park General Manager. “When I was growing up in the early 2000’s there were multiple floor hockey leagues in Westfield. Those leagues provided me with core childhood memories and eventually led me to playing ice hockey here at Amelia Park”. Fellows was inspired when he discovered the large crowd the Southwick Rec. Center draws in for their winter floor hockey league. “I heard about this league and discovered they have over 220 kids signed up, it’s truly amazing to see. Their league ends in April and I knew right then and there it was time to bring a league back to the Westfield community.”
Registration for the floor hockey league is $110 per player and will be open from February 27th until April 17th. Teams will practice once per week on either Monday or Tuesday and games will be played on Saturday mornings. To register visit www.ameliaparkarena.org.
